Ready to Add Keystone Plants?

Are you always trying to find balance in your garden? Including year-round beauty with support for wildlife can feel challenging at times. The good news? It doesn’t have to feel impossible. Let's make a plan to include native keystone plantings in our gardens for the new year (it feels too early to be thinking of 2027, but here we are!). Plus we have fall containers from Deborah Silver.

Garden Design Trends:
#1 Keystone Plantings

A few native “heavy lifters” can power most of your garden’s wildlife support. In the arid Western U.S., yellow rabbitbrush (pictured, Zones 3-8) is a great example: tough, adaptable, and feeding pollinators year-round. For the biggest impact, choose local keystones such as oaks, goldenrods, native asters, milkweeds, and wild sunflowers, and favor plants that provide food, shelter, and host-plant value. Let's strive for balance in the garden, where people, plants, and the environment work together. Photo by Rebecca Sweet.

Fun Fact: Research by entomologist Dr. Doug Tallamy found that just 14% of native plants (the keystone ‘superstars’) support an astonishing 90% of butterfly and moth species!

Plant a Pollinator Garden That Works Hard All Year

This guide shows how to implement Trend #1. Start with regional keystones, then layer smart design: plant in drifts, stagger bloom times from early spring to frost, add host plants and nesting spots, avoid pesticides, and provide cover for winter weather such as rain and wind.

Fall: Front and Center

Deborah Silver is filling bold fall containers with cabbage, kale, branches, and dramatic seasonal color to carry the garden forward. Crisp air, long shadows, and fiery leaves. It’s the garden’s last big opera, worth celebrating all the way into winter. Look how the Ruby Queen cabbages glow against the blue door. Crisp, tidy, and ready for November.
